Cesare Bruno (1919-2009) was born in Cantalupo, in the sub-urbs of Alessandria.

The sensibility of his paintings, made of much logic and much rigour complements with his classical and scientific studies: he took a degree in medicine and surgery in 1945 and, from then on he practised first in Alessandria, then in Turin, specializing in 5 branches and occupying more and more responsible positions at some public hospitals in those cities. In 1966 he was appointed manager of the Orthopedic Centre, known as CTO, in Turin. His demanding professional activity didn’t seem to keep him from devoting himself to painting, with excellent results.

Cesare Bruno devoted his entire life to art, showing a growing interest in a recurring subject that he developed in several directions: chairs have become for Cesare Bruno what Metaphysical Squares were for De Chirico. In spite of the evident and quite exclusive choice of a single subject, his painting has always been multiform and, I would even say, eclectic.

His chairs have got many souls; you can find the chair symbolizing the crowd and the solitary chair, the talking chair and the enigmatic one, the ironic chair and the dramatic one, the chair living in a bizarre world and the chair living in a familiar world; the chair as an icon of existence and the chair meant as pure emblem of beauty His first one-man show takes place in Turin, 1972, then other important exhibitions follow in 1972 again (Asti and Bologna),in 1975 (Milan and Turin), in 1976 and 1977 (Alessandria), in 1979 (Stuttgart, Germany), where he is entirely successful, in 1981 (Alessandria and Stuttgart again), in 1983 (Acqui Terme) and Rome in 1987. He then exhibited at many other galleries and in 1992 presented his anthology, edited by Marco Rosci, at the club Piemonte Artistico Culturale, Turin

He exhibited his works at several prestigious group shows, too. Hisfirst one, titled “Mostra dei Maestri” takes place in 1967 at the Gallery Garofalo, Rovigo.

He takes part as well in the Figurative Art Show at the gallery La Promotrice, Turin (1972), in the show “Citta Amica” at the Gallery Bolaffi, Turin (1973), in the 21st Quadrennial National Art Exhibition (1974), in the show “Le figure dell’Enigma” - 17th Vast Painting Prize (1975), in the Contemporary Painting National Show Citta di Borgosesia (1976), in “Rassegna D’Aprés” at the Gallery Kira Datrino, Torre Canavese (1977). He then exhibited for Unicef (1986), presented his works at the club Circolo Degli Artisti, Turin (1985), at the 23rd Aldo Roncaglia Biennial Exhition at San Felice sul Panaro (1992), and at Lingotto Fair Artissima, Turin (1997).

His painting awakened the curiousity, the interest and the enthusiasm of several art critics and writers like Giovanni Arpino, who writes: “Cesare Bruno ’s work is attaining its own globalism, daring itself for sure”
